The Compass #4: Halloween starts now, not October 20

Halloween is the one holiday where waiting costs you. The pieces that actually draw a crowd — a big inflatable, a projector, a decent fogger — start going out of stock in early October, and what's left over is picked through and marked up. So this issue is for anyone who plans to decorate at all this year: lock in the structural pieces now and decide on the small stuff later. Everything below is full-size and reusable rather than a one-season throwaway, and the six featured items are built to work together. The tree and the skeleton set your silhouette, the projector and screen add movement, the fogger fills the empty space after dark, and the cakelet pan handles the part of Halloween that happens indoors.

Pricing and availability are accurate as of September 4, 2026 and are subject to change.

Start with the big pieces

Joiedomi 8 FT Halloween Inflatable Scary Tree

$66.99 $34.99

An eight-foot silhouette does more for a yard than a dozen small props, and this one lights from the inside so it still reads from the street after dark. Stakes, ropes and built-in sandbags are included, so setup is a few minutes rather than an afternoon. Store it flat and it comes back every year.

3D Dynamic Skull Halloween Projector, Outdoor

$39.99

Projection is the cheapest way to add motion to a display, and motion is what makes people slow down as they walk past. This one stakes into the ground and throws a moving skull across a garage door, a wall, or a sheer curtain. Aim it at the largest flat surface you have rather than the most interesting one.

Also worth a look

Joiedomi 9 FT Halloween Inflatable UFO

$85.99

Nine feet tall and lit from inside, for anyone whose Halloween runs sci-fi rather than spooky. Works well as a second anchor if you already have something tall on the other side of the yard.

Odewhine Red Skull Hologram Projector, IP65

$36.99

Rated IP65 and stake-mounted, so it can live outside all season including through rain. A single red skull is a simpler look than a full animated scene, which suits a smaller wall or a fence panel better.

Smaller picks

Dazzle Bright 33 ft Purple & Orange Halloween String Lights

$13.99

One 33-foot run, sized for a porch rail, a doorway, or a single tree. Connectable, so you can add a second set later if one turns out to be not quite enough.

ITICdecor 33 ft Battery-Operated Halloween Lights

$9.99

Battery powered, which is the answer for a mantel, a wreath, or anywhere there isn't an outlet within reach. The built-in timer runs six hours on, eighteen off, so it handles itself.
