The Compass #1: September birthdays

Welcome to the Compass — Gift Compass's weekly shortlist of gifts worth actually buying. One theme, a handful of picks, a plain reason for each. September is the most common birth month in the country, which means you probably owe someone a gift in the next three weeks and haven't thought about it yet. Ten picks below, spread across the people you're most likely to be shopping for, all with enough runway to arrive on time if you order this week. Prices were checked on August 20 and move around — if something's jumped since, it isn't worth chasing. The harder problem isn't finding the gift, it's remembering three weeks out instead of three days out. If birthdays sneak up on you every year, put them in the gift calendar once and let it do the reminding. That's the whole reason this issue exists.

Pricing and availability are accurate as of August 19, 2026 and are subject to change.

The Picks

ThinkFun Gravity Maze Marble Run Logic Game - For a child

$27.95

Sixty challenge cards that go from "obvious" to "genuinely stumping a parent," built around dropping a marble through towers the kid has to arrange themselves. It's a one-player game, which is the actual selling point — it occupies a kid alone, without a screen, without you refereeing. Ages 8+ on the box, but a sharp six-year-old gets the early cards.

Fujifilm Instax Mini 12 Instant Camera - For A Teen

$158.95

Physical photos are novel to a generation that has never lacked for digital ones, and that's the whole reason this keeps landing with teenagers. Point, shoot, and the print is in your hand — no editing, no posting, no audience. Budget for film separately; the camera is cheap and the packs are where the real cost lives.

Time to suprise them with something nice!

Snack Variety Pack, 60-Count Box - Snack/Comfort

$30.05

The point of a first care package isn't the food, it's the box arriving. A big mixed carton covers the 11pm study gap and the roommate you haven't met yet, and it's the version of this that doesn't require guessing their favorites. Pick a mix heavy on shelf-stable, not chocolate — dorm rooms run warm in September.

Anker Power Strip with USB-C Ports - Dorm Practical

$29.99 $25.99

Dorm rooms have roughly two outlets and a lofted bed nowhere near either one. A surge-protected strip with built-in USB-C means one wall plug handles the laptop, phone, lamp, and whatever the roommate needs to borrow. Unglamorous, immediately used, and the thing they'll text home about needing in week three.

It's nearly fall

Light-Up Fall Maple Tree

$22.98

A 22-inch tabletop maple with orange and red leaves and 24 warm white LEDs. The low-effort version of fall decorating: one piece on an entry table or mantel that reads as seasonal without hauling out a bin of pumpkins. Warm white keeps it cozy rather than Halloween-orange.

Giant Fall Coloring Poster & Tablecloth, 30 x 72 in.

$7.98

A jumbo coloring banner that doubles as a table cover — thick paper that holds up to markers and elbows without tearing. It buys you a quiet hour at a fall party or on a rainy Saturday, then stays up as decor afterward. Works for a crowd of kids or one determined one.
