The Compass #2: Tailgate season starts Saturday

Welcome back to the Compass — Gift Compass's weekly shortlist of gifts and gear worth actually buying. One theme, a handful of picks, a plain reason for each. College football week one is Saturday, and the NFL follows two weeks later. This is the window where tailgate gear either gets bought or gets improvised badly for another season. Ten picks below: six for the lot, two for the people watching from the couch, two for Labor Day. Everything here ships in time if you order this week. Prices were checked on August 23 and move around — if something's jumped since, it isn't worth chasing. One more thing worth doing while you're here: the reason half of you are reading this is that a gift or a get-together crept up on you. Put the recurring ones in the gift calendar once and let it handle the reminding.

Pricing and availability are accurate as of August 23, 2026 and are subject to change.

The tailgate kit

Coleman Classic Rolling Cooler

$124.99

Wheels and a tow handle, which matters more than capacity when the good parking is a quarter mile from where you're setting up. Leak-resistant drain means you're not carrying a sloshing box back to the car at the end of the day. Coleman rates it at five days of ice — treat that as the lab number and prechill it the night before if you want anywhere near it in September heat.

Royal Gourmet 3-Burner Propane Griddle with Collapsible Stand

$197.99

A flat top instead of grates, which is the right call for a tailgate: smash burgers, eggs, peppers and onions, nothing falling through into the flame. Three burners means you can run hot on one side and hold food warm on the other. Bring your own propane tank, and budget five minutes at the end for scraping it down while it's still hot.

Also worth a look

Nuogo Foam Can Cooler Sleeves, 24-Pack

$24.99

Twenty-four of them, because they migrate — into other people's hands, under chairs, into the wrong cooler. Foam keeps a can cold and keeps condensation off your hands, and having enough for everyone means nobody's setting a warm drink down and losing it. Football print, so they read as tailgate gear rather than leftover wedding favors.

Melamine Serving Tray with Handles

$14.99

Melamine survives a parking lot in a way ceramic doesn't, and the handles mean one person carries the whole spread from the car instead of making two trips with plates. Reusable, washes clean, and it makes food look like food rather than something eaten out of the package it came in.

Labor Day, two weeks out

Yoehka 34-Piece Grilling Tool Set

$42.99 $27.99

The core of it is a heavy-duty tongs, spatula, and fork that won't flex when you're moving a loaded burger — the rest of the 34 pieces are skewers and corn holders you'll use occasionally. Comes in a case, which is the real value: everything stays together instead of scattered across three drawers by October.

Pop-Up Mesh Food Covers, 17-Inch, 6-Pack

$13.99

The problem with eating outside is everything that also wants to eat outside. These pop open over a platter and collapse flat for storage, and six covers the whole table at once. Cheap fix for the thing that quietly makes outdoor food unpleasant.
