Secret Santa assigns each person one secret recipient ahead of time. White Elephant (also called Yankee Swap or Dirty Santa) has no secret pairing at all — everyone brings one wrapped gift, and a random turn order decides who opens or steals a gift, in front of the whole group.
On your turn, you either unwrap a new gift from the pile or steal an already-opened gift from someone else. When your gift gets stolen, you immediately take another turn — open new or steal again. Most groups cap how many times any single gift can be stolen before it's 'locked.'
The person first in turn order only gets to open a new gift (there's nothing to steal yet), which is generally seen as the least exciting slot. The last person often has the biggest advantage, since they can steal any gift already in play.
